How To Stay Awake While Driving
According to U.S. National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration, fatigued drivers contribute to approximately 100,000 highway
crashes, causing 71,000 injuries and 1,500 deaths each year. They also reported that sleepy drivers are
more tense and tend to drive faster when they should really be stopping to rest. No matter what
you do, you may find yourself getting drowsy at the wheel, especially in a long travel. Here are some tips
to help you stay alert and safe while driving:
Get enough sleep. Get more sleep at night. One of the common reasons why some drivers get drowsy
when driving is that they don't have enough sleep at night.
Avoid driving when tired. Driving when tired is no fun at all. If you feel tired and lethargic, ride a cab or bus instead. If you are already on the road
and not feeling well, simply pull over in a safe place and take a short nap.
Have a break. Some people want to get to their destination fast, but that's not the most advisable thing to do. Schedule a break every two hours or every 100 miles or if you notice any signs of
sleepiness. Have some coffee or any caffeine beverages to help you stay awake.
Have some accompany. Consider having someone in a long trip. Talk to that
person while driving or maybe periodically switch drivers.
Avoid taking medicines. Do not take antihistamines,
antidepressants and cold and cough medications before hitting the road.
