Recommended Websites How Does A Car Computer Work? As cars get modern, they also get complicated in terms of how to operate them. New car models today have a computer with varying functions and capabilities such as controlling the levels of emission, fuel efficiency and many others. But do you know how a car computer works? Does it really make your auto perform better? Car computers were first introduced into the automotive industry in the mid 70’s when engineers were seeking ways to control automobile exhaust system. They realized that they needed a way to more precisely control the introduction of fuel into the engine and began experimenting with electronic fuel injection. But this revolution would not have been possible without advances in many other fields. In order to perform these control functions, they come up with the use of computers. It turns out that having a computer in a car make more precise control of some of the system also led to better performance. A car computer is similar to a desktop computer. The only difference is that the automobile computer is specialized to perform only one very complicated function which is to control your car. It can control the fuel and ignition systems, the temperature in the passenger compartment, and even the braking system. In a computer-controlled system, changing the operation only requires a change in the program rather than a mechanical change. Controlling the engine is the most processor-intensive job on your car, whereas the engine control unit or ECU is the most powerful computer on most vehicles. This ECU looks similar to a computer's motherboard that cosists of the processor and hundreds of other components on a multilayer circuit board. This auto computer processing manages the emission levels and fuel efficiency. Automotive Sites: |
