How Air Brakes Work

Air brake system is one of the many types of auto brakes commonly installed in big vehicles such as trains, buses and trailers. These automobiles use air brakesso they don’t have to rely on the hydraulic fluid in car braking systems that can run out in the event of a leak. But how can this air-brake device stop a huge speeding vehicle?

You might be aware that when when someone pushes the brake pedal towards the floor of the car, it slows and eventually stops. In an air brake, the triple-valve system fills a supply tank and uses air pressure to release the brakes. This triple-valve system performs three functions. First is the charging of the system pressure with air before the brakes will be released. When it is not in use, it remains engaged, and once it reaches its pressure, the brakes are ready to use. Next is the applying. When the brakes are in use, the pressure decreases. The valve allows air back into the tanks, while the brakes move to the applied position. Last function is the releasing of the brakes. The increased pressure releases the brakes.

The basic components of an air brake system are the following:

Air compressor - pumps the the air into the storage tanks.
Air reservoir tanks - holds the pressurized air.
Drain valves - is the releasing valve in the air tanks that drains the pressurized air when the vehicle is not in use.
Brake S-cam - is a s-shaped cam that pushes brake shoes away and against the brake drum.
Brake shoes - cause friction against the brake drum.
Return spring - is connected to the brake shoes that returns to its open position when not spread by the s-cam.
