Components of Turn Signals and Their Functions
Designed as a warning device, turn signals first appeared on automobiles in 1939 and since then it became a standard equipment for all
vehicles. Also known as blinkers, turn signals are designed to help communicate intended vehicle direction, warning other drivers
of your impending moves. The turn signal system is operated by a turn signal switch, by activating the
turn signal switch you are able to alert people around your vehicle by flashing a light bulb at the front
and rear of the vehicle. So how does a turn signal device work?
The basic components of signals lights are bulbs at the front and back of the vehicle, and wires
that is connected to the electrical system of a car. The turn signal circuit gets power when the ignition
key is on. Turn signals work by pushing a lever up or down, which causes the vehicles turn signals to
flash. This lever is usually mounted on the back of steering wheel together with other car features.
A
turn signal flasher unit is incorporated into the system and is used to break and reconnect the blinker
bulb circuit. The power enters through a fuse panel into the thermal flasher, cylindrical device often
located under the dashboard of the car on the driver’s side. When you push the turn signal stalk down, the
thermal flasher connects to the turn signal bulbs by way of the turn signal switch.
Failing to use signal lights can cause road accidents. Without this device, you might not see a car in your blind spot or
which way the car is going. If the blinker system is not operating check the fuse first, then try replacing
the flasher. Always replace blinker bulbs with recommended bulbs. Driving with broken or not
working signal lights can attract traffic police.
